Northern Meningitis and Covid-19 locked In Deadly Challenge

The perennial meningitis infections in Ghana is currently challenging deadly Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak in Ghana to a morbid duel after claiming  37 lives in the Northern part of the country,

Covid-19 which broke out in Ghana early March has so far infected 313 people and killed 6. But the meningitis incident has infected a little less, but has killed more within a shorter space of time.

Last Saturday, authorities announced that some 33 people had been killed by the cerebral infection.

According to the Ghana Health Services, the total number of persons infected with the endemic has increased from 214 to 247 within the past week.

A release from the Regional Health directorate cited the Nadowli/Kaleo district and the Nandom municipality as the hardest-hit areas.

The Nadowli District recorded 74 cases with 12 deaths while the Nandom Municipality also has 76 cases with 10 fatalities.

The Jirapa Municipality follows with 42 cases, out of which nine people have died.

Ghana is currently caught in a race against time with the deadly Covid-19 coronavirus and all concentration on it has shifted attention from the devastating effect of meningitis in the North.

Meningitis is reportedly an air-borne disease that has a fatality rate of about 50% if prompt care is not given to patients.
