President Akufo-Addo has claimed that he is surprised about the fact that shut radio stations perceived to be aligned to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), have not used legal processes to return on air.
Responding to a request by the NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the President claimed he could not order for the Stations to be allowed back on air because he did not close them down.
“I am surprised about the amnesty for the radio stations, the law is very clear on why they have been closed down, they were not closed down by me so it is difficult for me to be the one to unlock them. The procedures are there, I am surprised almost a year these procedures have not been used to get back on track, they need to engage the NMC and use all procedures available,” the President said.
The shocking claim has left nothing to the imagination, but a clear pointer that a rumoured plan to keep these stations off-air until after the 2020 election is on course.
President Akufo-Addo is claiming he is surprised that the Stations have not undergone the necessary legal processes to return on air when it is reported that the stations are not back on air because Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu has blatantly refused to allow them.
Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful’s recalcitrance is to the extent that even the Parliamentary Committee on Communications was snubbed when the Minister was approached and asked to allow the stations back on air.
Radio Gold and Radio XYZ, which were taken off air in 2019 have said that they have completed all the necessary paperwork needed for them to resume transmission, but the Minister has reportedly refused to let them back.
It has long been speculated that Jubilee House itself, is the one which has instructed Ursula Owusu to ensure that the stations do not come back on air until after the 2020 election.
