The leaders of the major political parties in the country have pledged solidarity with the Akufo Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fight the deadly Covid-19 corinavirus in Ghana.
The group made up of their top executives met President Akufo Addo at the Jubilee House today Friday, 3rd April, 2020.
The parties include the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Conventions People’s Party (CPP), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the NDC’s National Chairman who has been hounded by the ruling party for allegedly threatening to kidnap its members, pleaded for unity in fighting the coronavirus which had infected over 204 Ghanaians and killed five in just three week.
The NDC Chairman wants all the parties “to come together, put our shoulder to the wheel, and assist government fight and defeat the pandemic.”
According to President Akufo-Addo, the meeting was called on the behest of the Jubilee House because “It is essentially for us to have an opportunity to exchange information with each other, and, more than anything else, to agree on the measures that we can take as political leaders to ensure the unity of our nation at this critical time, and to stress the need for solidarity amongst ourselves.”
Meanwhile, Stan Xoexe Dogbe, a former aide to ex-President John Dramani Mahama, has slammed Jubilee House aides for using the solidarity meeting to spin mischief.
In an angry Facebook post, he revealed how the sime staffers at the Jubilee House had wanted to create an impression that ex-President Mahama declined to attend the meeting.
“The display of political childishness by the Jubilee House and the quest to always look at scoring political points instead of a focus on proper governance will obviously not end soon,” Mr. Dogbe wrote.
“As is predictable of the conduct of the President and his officials, I have noted, like many others have, a photograph of a labeled chair taken in the Jubilee House Banquet Hall, and which has been handed down to some internet junkies to spread around, suggesting that former President John Dramani Mahama refused to attend a meeting of political party heads this afternoon.”
