The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has admonished its communicators, to stay away from controversial statements purportedly emerging from the Electoral Commission to the effect that the 2020 election would be postponed.
Apparently, somebody at the EC is threatening that if a new voters register is not readied as planned by the EC because of the current Covid-19 crisis, the 2020 election will not be held.
A statement from the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has admonished all of its communicators to stay away from such debates, saying it is a trap to remove their focus from the ongoing battle against Covid-19.
“We in the NDC view these pronouncements as statements designed to create controversy when the attention of the people of Ghana is focused opn the efforts of the government and other stakeholders to take the necessary measures to ensure the preservation of the lives and welfare of the good people of Ghana. accordingly, the NDC is by this statement urging all its communicators to avoid being drawn into matters that are irrelevant to the fight to stop the spread of the pandemic.”
The statement said the party does not place value on any issues that do not have any direct bearing on the preservation of life, citing Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu’s invitation to some members of the erstwhile Mahama Administration to help with investigations into the Airbus scandal as one such issues.
It rather urged all party officers to spend time educating members of the public on practices that will help fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
