Members of Ghana’s Parliament are eagerly awaiting an upcoming recess next week.
This is in spite of the country being caught in the thick of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.
Today in Parliament, members referenced the upcoming break in various submissions on the floor of the House.
A break for Parliament means only the Executive, led by the President will be left to shoulder the burden of the Coronavirus battle.
The implication for this is that if the Government needs to make an emergency expenditure, it cannot access the money because per law, the executive can only spend with the approval of Parliament
It is a common expectation that because the country is at war with the deadly virus, Parliament would stay on to work. But as was expressed by MPs today, the desire to go on break is relished.
The desire to go home had manifested among MPs weeks earlier, with some MPs, including the Legislator for Krachi West, Helen Ntoso, suggesting that the House break for the safety of MPs
According to her, parliament’s continuous sitting after President Akufo Addo had issued prohibition against public gathering of more than 25 people, was flagrant violation of the directive.
