Coronavirus Scare Hits Ghana Embassies Abroad

Several Ghanaian Embassies abroad are scrambling for cover following the outbreak of the global pandemic called Covid-19.

The Ghana Embassy in the United States of America (USA) and the Embassy in Berlin Germany have announced that they are indefinitely suspending consular services.

These embassies will not be issuing visas, passports to citizens and non-citizens for travels to Ghana. This is in sync with the weekend travel restrictions slapped on travels into Ghana by the Ghanaian government, following confirmations that all the six cases of Covid-19 recorded in Ghana were “imported” from Europe and the United States.

In a statement by Information and Public Affairs Unit of the Embassy, the Embassy noted that the suspension which takes effect from today March 17, affects both mailed and in-person services.

“All mails received prior to the effective date will be processed and dispatched to applicants,” the Embassy stated.

Meanwhile, the statement also said the Ghana Embassy in consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has also halted all official travels and public engagements.

A similar statement was today issued by the Gina Blay-headed Ghanaian Embassy in Germany.

The coronavirus pandemic which transmits from human to human originated in Wuhan-China and has so far infected more than 182,400 people and killed approximately 7,100 globally.

More than 4,400 cases have been recorded in the United States with at least 86 fatalities while Germany has so far recorded over 6,000 cases with more than 50 deaths.
