The US and Ghana governments have conspired to deploy one of the worlds most notorious mobile phone hacking spyware tools in Ghana.
Whatsup News has gathered from reliable sources within the US State Department that, as at December 2018, the US was secretly seeking to purchase the sophisticated mobile phone hacking spyware for Ghana.
On December 7, the international spyware industry was awash with intelligence that the US State Department was specifically looking for a specific phone hacking devices for the Ghana’s Police.
According to US organizations that monitor the use of technology that impacts citizens, the specific equipment being purchased for Ghana is able to perform several tasks, including “bypassing security for Android devices, including HTC, Motorola and the Samsung Galaxy S, SII and SIII; data extraction and decoding for BlackBerry devices running OS 4-7 and Nokia BB5 devices; data extraction from any device running Windows phone 7.5 or 8; and decryption of trip logs for TomTom navigation devices”.
The citizens rights watch has confirmed that “The equipment is also reportedly having UltraBlock forensic kits, a discreet kit used as adapters to connect to any kind of device that needs cracking without compromising the device or the information stored within” .
According to a US defence publication, the device that is being purchased for Ghana is “a UFED Ultimate 4PC application developed by CELBRITE, the company that gained notoriety for being able to crack the IPHONE used by a mass shooter in San Bernardino, California in 2015, ending a legal standoff between the FBI and Apple”
A Digital intelligence specialist who reviewed the specific government solicitation of for the purchase of the hacking device have said that “the tools being bought for Ghana have been used by nation states for offensive operations around the globe”
These devices are often used to track journalists and political opponents and activists, Whatsup News gathered.
The notorious mobile phone hacking tools being deployed in Ghana are similar to the one used in the tracking and murder of Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was gruesomely murdered by Saudi Arabian authorities for being critical of the draconian Saudi regime.
Controversy
Controversy is already emerging on why it the US government that is buying the device for the government and which politicians diverted the device.
Some sources point to the fact that some political operatives in the government of Ghana are cleverly trying to create the opportunity for deniability should the public find out about the existence and deployment. According to these sources “the simple answer if they are caught is that the US government donated the hacking tools for law enforcement”.
Experts in Ghana are now saying that they fear that the hacking tools are already being used against political opponents by the government adding that “no wonder these when the police arrest you these days, they say bring your phone or they cease your phone”
What is emerging is that, even though the device was being smuggled into Ghana via the US Embassy in Ghana under the guise of helping the fight against international narcotic trafficking, some politicians insisted on diverting the device from Narcotic Control Board to the Ghana Police where it could be used for non-narcotic related operations.
Some sources are also saying this phone hacking equipment is reportedly one of the perks given to Ghana by the US after the current government agreed to host the US’ Africa Command (Africom) military base and for Ghana agreeing to be a major weapons hub for the US military establishment into Africa.
