Prez Buhari To ECOWAS: ‘Please Exercise On Border Closure’

Nigerian President, Muhamadu Buhari, has urged ECOWAS, and especially, neighboring countries affected by the closure of its borders to exercise patience as efforts continue behind the scenes to resolve impasse.

In a tweet Friday, leader of Africa’s most populous country said he is eagerly looking forward to recommendations that a tripartite committee set up by ECOWAS to look into the debacle, will present and that as soon as he receives the recommendations he will act on it.

President Buhari had tweeted after meeting with the President of Burkina Faso, Marc Christian Kabore.

“I met with the President of Burkina Faso at the Statehouse, I assured him that Nigeria is very much mindful of the concerns of neighbouring countries and ECOWAS on the issue and that we will find an early and enduring solution. I am awaiting the report of the tripartite committee and will work as fast as I can as soon as I receive the report,” President Buhari tweeted.

President Kabore is the Chairman of the Tripartite committee taxed by the ECOWAS heads of states to find a solution to the concerns raised by stakeholders resulting in the Nigeria border closure.

Africa’s most populous country closed its borders to neighbours in August 2019 and has since kept the border closed.

According to the Buhari government, the measure is a check against the smuggle of illegal goods into Nigeria.
