Efforts Kick Started To Clean Tano River Of Acid Spillage

Efforts have kick started to cleanse the Tano River of acid pollution after an articulated truck carrying batteries accidentally plunged into the water.

The Municipal Assembly and the Bono East regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are said to have started the process to retrieve car batteries that the articulated track was carrying from the water.

The truck was said to be transporting the car batteries from Tema to Tamale when it accidentally plunged into the river which is the main source of water for the inhabitants of Techiman Tanoso and its surrounding communities.

Pollution from the acid that contaminated the water has since led to the death of marine life, including crocodiles and fish.

Following the accident which occurred around 11 am yesterday, the MP for the area, Hon. JohnKofi Benyina, together with an official from NADMO visited the area for firsthand knowledge.

A press statement was subsequently released warning inhabitants of the pollution and asking them to stay away from the water.

“All communities along the Tano river from Techiman – Tanoso to Chira, Duayaw Nkwanta, Bechem are advised strongly not to drink the Tano river water effective today till further notice.

“This release is necessitated by an accident involving an articular truck carrying car battery @Tanoso in the Bono East Region. As a result of the accident, the acid in the battery diluted into the water culminating to the death of several aquatic animals including fishes, crocodiles etc.

“We are by this urging all to carry the message to the target  communities/people along the Tano river bank to safe human lives.”

WhatsUp News has heard that even before the efforts to clean the water, the river’s PH level has begun improving.
