Police Brutalise protesting law students

Amateur videos emerging show protesting law students complaining of police brutality following their match today to demonstrate against prohibitive policies against law students seeking to be called to the bar.

Unconfirmed reports have it that at least eight protesters have been arrested by the police anti-riot unit after firing several warning shots and spraying hot water in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

News picked up by Whatsup News shows that the Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the Ghana School of Law, Jonathan Alua was among those arrested by the rampaging anti-riot officers of the Ghana Police.

There are also reports that a cameraman has been shot in the arm and has been rushed to the Police Hospital. It is unclear if this shot was from a live bullet or not.

Meanwhile, the police department has insisted that it unleashed its men on the protesting law students because they did not have the permission to converge at the Jubilee House, as the students marched towards the Presidential Palace.

The demonstration with the hashtag #OpenUpLegalEducation, started at the Law School in Makola at the heart of the capital to the Jubilee House where the protesters were set to present a petition to President Akufo-Addo.

The students are angry at the draconian policy of the General Legal Council (GLC) to make law career prohibitive for prospective students. This is evident in the massive failure rate yearly.

This year, only 128 students out of the 1,820 candidates who sat for entrance exams passed to be admitted.
