Akufo-Addo To Announce National Plastic Policy Tomorrow

President Akufo-Addo will tomorrow announce a comprehensive policy that government has put together to govern plastic manufacture and its management in the country.

The Ghana National Plastic Partnership and Waste Recovery Platform will provide a comprehensive template on how the country can manage its plastic which has been a major source of pollution in the country.

It is not clear if the policy is an inspirational outcome from the President’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly the previous week, which had Climate Change as its most important agenda.

At the meeting, teenage climate activist, 16 year old Greta Thunberg, had scolded world leaders for inaction and indifference towards climate change which scientist say is worsening at a pace that could lead to the destruction of all life on earth in a matter of a century, if bold actions are not taken to cut down Carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, ahead of tomorrow’s announcement by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Plastic manufacturers are warning that any ban of plastic products will not be tolerated.

Dr, Daniel Toniga, Director of Policy for the Federation of Plastic Manufacturers and Recyclers says any ban would be noting but a lazy approach to solving the issue of plastic waste management.

According to him, what government should pursue is an aggressive policy of plastic recycle and a secular economy that would ensure that cyclical value is gained from plastic and its waste.

He warned that if the government were to decide to ban plastics, at least 350,000 direct jobs and over a million indirect jobs would be lost.
