Scabies Outbreak In North East Spreads To Gambaga Senior High

Forty two (42) students of the Gambaga Senior High School have caught the scabies skin disease after an outbreak in the North East Region was reported on September 14.

The affected students are said to have since been sent for treatment at the Gamabaga Municipal Health Center, while Health authorities have supplied the school with medicines and disinfectants to forestall further spread.

At least, sixteen communities in the Gambaga Municipality have been affected since the September 14 outbreak. Every one of two hundred households have reportedly been affected, with at least five members of each household catching the skin disease which caused by a bacteria.

It is not really clear what triggered the outbreak, but the Municipal Directorate for Health Services has blamed the spread on community members not reporting to health center there on time.

Dr. Mark Abugri, Municipal Director for Health Services, laments that an opportunity to contain the disease from spreading after the outbreak has been lost and now the Municipal Health Directorate  is constrained to deal with huge numbers.

The Directorate has started treating victims after medicine arrived on Sunday for the deployment to the 16 communities affected by the outbreak. Dr. Abugri revealed that some 400 people affected, including children in three communities were supplied medicine by close of Tuesday. Three more communities Daglibole, Tamboku and Latebu were also catered for.
