SHS Students’ Fate Hangs As Schools Re-open This Weekend

There is uncertainty about the fate of students ahead of the re-opening of Senior High Schools this weekend, September 15, 2019, following hints of lack of funds for feeding and other administrative costs and an indefinite strike declared by graduate teachers.

Heads of Senior High Schools are pushing for the postponement of the reopening date following the delay in the disbursement of funds. Sources say the Conference of Heads of Government Assisted Secondary Schools officially notified government through Management of the Ghana Education Service, GES on two occasions, to reschedule the reopening date but their request has been ignored.

According to the time table released by the GES, the first semester for the 2019/2020 academic year for forms 1 and 2 begins this Sunday, September 15th.
Students under the green track, both first and second years under the free SHS programme, are to report this Sunday while those on the gold track will be reporting to school for the first semester on November 12.
Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa has also noted that schools on the single track will also re-open on the same day.

Meanwhile, the nationwide strike by the Association of Graduate Teachers, NAGRAT kicks into full gear this week ahead of the re-opening.
NAGRAT President, ERIC ANGEL CARBONU who addressed a news conference last Thursday, said all teachers are to comply with its directives in solidarity till there is a positive response.

The strike among other things follow growing agitation over frustrations resulting from the Newly Introduced Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) acquired by the Public Services Commission.

The Ghana Education Service has in recent times been outlining the schedule for both Green and Gold Track students under the free SHS programme following confusion among parents about when their wards are to report or be picked for vacation.
